Nanosene (Pty) Ltd is the first bespoke polymer supplier from Africa that focuses on developing and producing amphiphilic polymers to isolate molecular drug targets. This breakthrough technology can transform the world of medicine by empowering researchers and drug developers to explore new avenues for treating various diseases.

For researchers and drug developers to create and discover new therapeutics to treat diseases such as obesity, depression or even cancer, they need to study and understand proteins embedded in the cell membrane. These membrane proteins play an essential role in regulating physiological processes, therefore considered prime therapeutic targets for nearly 70% of FDA-approved drugs.

Nanosene’s technology produces polymers that act as indispensable tools for the solubilisation of intact and functional membrane proteins in nanoscale discs. This nanodisc technology offers researchers the unprecedented opportunity to access some of the most valued proteins in a biologically active state. Our team of skilled and knowledgeable scientists is dedicated to offering top-notch guidance and services to our clients, helping them achieve their research objectives and contribute to the advancement of therapeutic design.

Meet our team

We are happy to introduce our core team, while behind the scenes we have great scientists working on our new developments!

Gestél Kuyler

CEO

Gestél Kuyler is an up-and-coming young scientist. She is a qualified polymer scientist and co-inventor of Nanosene's core technology developed during her PhD research. This offers a highly customisable platform of polymers used for the isolation of pharmacologically relevant drug target (GPCRs).

Bert Klumperman

CTO

Bert has spent three decades on the investigation of poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) and its derivatives, in an industrial as well as in an academic setting. In recent years, he fully embraced the SMALP technology and made this a central research theme in his group.

Elaine Barnard

Operations Manager

Elaine Barnard is highly skilled in research and development, with a notable background in postdoctoral work overseas as well as experience within a scientific startup. Elaine's impressive technical expertise renders her ideally suited for the position of Operations Manager.

In close collaboration with the Klumperman Research Group, Nanosene is the official commercialisation avenue for all potentially profitable innovations developed within the group.
Nanosene (Pty) Ltd is a proud spin-out company of Stellenbosch University.
