This publication represents a major milestone for Nanosene, highlighting the innovative core technology developed during the PhD research of our co-founder, Gestél Kuyler, at Stellenbosch University.

  • Membrane proteins (MPs) play essential roles in virtually every aspect of cell biology and are crucial targets for therapeutic intervention. But they’re notoriously difficult to work with: traditional detergent-based extraction methods often destabilise the proteins and disrupt their lipid environments.

Enter BzAM Terpolymers: an optimised alternative to standard SMA copolymers. These polymers are produced via controlled polymerization techniques, with well-defined properties and form nanoscale discs that preserve the structural and functional integrity of MPs, opening new avenues for structural biology, drug discovery, and biotechnology.ion text goes here

  • What Makes BzAM Polymers Unique?

The BzAM series is designed as an advanced, tunable platform:

    • Tunable amphiphilicity: Adjust the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance to suit different targets.

    • Controlled molecular weight and distribution: Achieve reproducibility and consistent performance.

    • Industry-relevant design: Built to outperform traditional SMA while offering greater experimental flexibility and advanced functionalities.

This rational design approach allows researchers to explore how polymer properties affect protein extraction and downstream approaches systematically.

    • Efficient membrane solubilization using BzAM terpolymers, including the bacterial ABC transporter Sav1866.

    • Hydrophobicity–efficiency correlation: The more hydrophobic the polymer, the better its solubilization performance for this target.

    • Reinforces the importance of tailored polymer design for targeted membrane protein applications.

This is more than a product; it’s a research-enabling tool designed to improve outcomes across pharmaceutical R&D, structural biology, and biotechnology.
