Nanosene CEO Named Entrepreneur of the Month
We’re proud to share that Gestél Kuyler, co-founder and CEO of Nanosene, has been named Stellenbosch Network’s Entrepreneur of the Month for August 2024!
This recognition shines a spotlight on her journey, from academic research to launching Africa’s first bespoke polymer innovator.
From Lab Bench to Boardroom
Gestél’s story is rooted in a curiosity about how things work. Her academic path led her into polymer chemistry, where they uncovered a game-changing opportunity: designing smarter polymers to stabilise notoriously tricky membrane proteins.
That scientific discovery didn’t stay on the lab bench; it became the foundation for Nanosene, a biotech startup company built to equip researchers with tools for better drug discovery, bioanalysis, and structural biology.
Under her leadership, Nanosene has:
Developed the BzAM Terpolymer Series, now used by international researchers tackling membrane protein challenges.
Collaborated internationally with academic institutions and biotech innovators.
Embodied the ethos that science-driven entrepreneurship can thrive on African soil.
What Sets Gestél Apart
“I love the intersection between science and business,” Gestél told Stellenbosch Network.
“Starting a company allowed me to stay connected to the science I love, while solving real problems and enabling other researchers globally.”
Her leadership style is hands-on, innovative, and people-focused. From mentoring PhD candidates to forging partnerships with global distributors, Gestél is embracing what it means to be a scientist-entrepreneur.
What’s Next for Nanosene?
With a clear vision and growing recognition, Nanosene continues to expand its reach in membrane protein research, drug development, and biotechnological innovation.
Gestél’s recent award isn’t just a personal accolade; it’s a reflection of the exciting future that lies ahead for Nanosene, and for African innovation in science and technology.
